John (Dec) & Rod Tanner (Retired)

Representative Zone for John & Rod Tanner: Victoria
ANBC Hall of Fame, Breeders Excellence Division Induction: 2004

The Tanner partnership, made up of the late John Tanner and his son Rod Tanner, holds a special place in the history of the Australian budgerigar fancy. Representing Victoria, the duo earned eight ANBC National Class wins during a dominant period between 1988 and 1991, securing their place in the prestigious ANBC Hall of Fame.

Their first win came in 1988 with a standout Green, followed by an impressive trio of wins in 1989 in the Green and Black Eyed Self Colour classes. Their ability to consistently present birds of national standard across multiple varieties was further proven in 1990, with victories in Spangle Combination and Variegated Pied. The 1991 ANBC National Titles marked a pinnacle in their success, with three wins—in Opaline, Cinnamonwing and Hens Class.

John and Rod were known not only for their high-quality birds but also for their strong partnership and commitment to the fancy. Their birds were admired for their type, balance, and condition, setting a benchmark in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

The Hall of Fame induction recognises both John’s legacy and long-standing contribution to the hobby. Their achievements continue to be remembered with respect and admiration throughout the Australian budgerigar community.
