ANBC Hall of Fame, Breeders Excellence Division Induction: 2004

Bruce Sheppard & Colin Flanagan are two of the most accomplished people in the Australian budgerigar community, proudly representing Victoria with an extraordinary show record. At the inception of the ANBC Hall of Fame in 2004, Bruce & Colin entered with nine National Class wins already to their name. Their dominance did not stop there. Over the following two decades, they added an impressive 27 additional class wins across numerous years: 2008, 2009 (3), 2010 (2), 2011 (2), 2012 (2), 2013 (3), 2014 (2), 2016 (2), 2017 (1), 2018 (2), 2019 (2), 2022 (2), 2023 (2), and 2024 (1) — bringing their total to a remarkable 36 wins at the ANBC National Titles.

Birds from the partnership have excelled in a wide variety of classes, notably achieving four or more wins in the Black-eyed Self Colour, Opaline AOSV, Clearwing, and Crest classes. These results reflect their deep genetic knowledge, high-level breeding practices, and dedication to excellence.

Shaping the Fancy

Beyond their success on the show bench, Bruce and Colin are widely respected for their lifelong dedication to the budgerigar fancy. Renowned mentors, they have guided countless new breeders while consistently upholding and promoting the standards of the hobby. Their enduring achievements and unwavering commitment make them truly deserving inductees into the ANBC Hall of Fame Breeder’s Excellence Division.

Both Bruce and Colin have served as Presidents of the ANBC on multiple occasions. Bruce has also held the role of ANBC Auditor, while Colin has been the ANBC Show Manager for nearly every Victorian-hosted National. Their contributions extend deeply into the Budgerigar Council of Victoria (BCV), where they have served for decades in key positions including President, Secretary, and Ring Registrar.

Appointed as Senior Panel Judges at just 17 years of age, Bruce and Colin have judged extensively across Australia. At the time, they were both so young that Harold Heath and Frank Gardiner had to drive them to judge shows. Their influence has been pivotal at every level of the BCV and ANBC, helping to shape and strengthen the foundations of the hobby nationwide.

In July 2024, Bruce Sheppard sadly passed away.
