Australian National Budgerigar Council
ANBC National Show: 2020–2029
A Decade of Resilience and Innovation
The 2020 to 2029 period has been a defining era for the Australian National Budgerigar Council (ANBC), shaped by unprecedented challenges and remarkable adaptation. The global COVID-19 pandemic brought the annual championship to a halt in both 2020 and 2021, marking the first time in history that the ANBC National Show was cancelled. With travel restrictions and public health concerns in place, the ANBC shifted to online meetings and strategic planning, showing flexibility and resilience in the face of adversity.
In 2022, the ANBC held its first post-pandemic show—but without a live audience. For the first time ever, the National was delivered exclusively online via YouTube. While this was initially a necessity, it quickly proved a game-changer, opening up a new era of digital engagement and access to audiences across Australia and around the world. It was a turning point in how the event was viewed and shared.
The following year, 2023, saw a triumphant return to public events. Hosted regionally in Ballarat, Victoria by the Budgerigar Council of Victoria (BCV), the hybrid model combined in-person attendance with online streaming, drawing a large and enthusiastic crowd. It marked a return to tradition—enhanced by modern technology.
In 2024, the Nationals travelled to Launceston, Tasmania, a location known for its strong community and scenic charm. This year introduced an exciting new initiative called “On The Perch”, launched during the Friday night Meet and Greet. This media-focused addition featured live interviews and insights, increasing interaction and visibility across the budgerigar community.
Also in 2024, the longstanding partnership with Mars Birdcare was renewed and restructured, helping to elevate the event’s professionalism and support. As the decade progresses, the ANBC continues to embrace change while remaining rooted in the spirit of national unity and breeder excellence.
