ANBC Hall of Fame, Breeders Excellence Induction: 2025
The journey in budgerigars began when Troy Holmes, then just 11 years old, started breeding birds in regional Victoria. Troy paused his involvement in the hobby in 1995 when he moved to Melbourne to attend university, but his passion for budgerigars was reignited a decade later. In 2005, he re-entered the scene under the family partnership name, in South Australia.
Their breakthrough on the national stage came in 2018 at the ANBC National Show in Penrith, where they claimed their first Logie with a Normal Grey Green cock—fittingly, the pet bird of Troy’s son, Thomas. Although they didn’t place in Brisbane the following year, they rebounded strongly after the COVID hiatus. At the 2022 Nationals in Victor Harbor, Kelly and Troy secured a win in the Normal Blue class, marking a major step forward. Building on that momentum, they took home a Logie in Ballarat for the Whitecap variety during the variety’s first year earning points. The following year saw another win, this time in the Crested class, cementing their consistency at the top level.
Their most impressive showing to date came in 2025 in Cairns, where they earned an extraordinary four Logies—winning in the Normal Grey Green, Cinnamonwing, Dominant Pied, and Whitecap classes. These victories contributed significantly to the South Australian team’s performance, with 43 of 87 birds presented in the team, and 274 of 398 points scored. This total surpassed the previous individual contribution record of 202 points set by Henry George in 2015 during his iconic 7-Logie triumph in Busselton, Western Australia.
