Barney Hackney (dec)
Induction into the A.N.B.C. Inc. HALL OF FAME – SERVICE DIVISION Barney Hackney (South Queensland)
There are people in this hobby who win on the bench, and there are people who build the very pathways that allow others to stand there. Barney Hackney’s legacy belongs to the second kind — the quiet, determined service that strengthens a Zone, supports a National organisation, and leaves the fancy better than it was found.
From the very beginning, Barney has been a builder. He was a co-founder of the South Queensland Budgerigar Breeders Association Inc. (SQBBA) in 1979/1980, helping establish what would become a cornerstone club for the Zone. In those early years, when the future of a young organisation depends entirely on the commitment of a few, Barney was one of the people who carried the responsibility — not for recognition, but because he believed South Queensland deserved a strong, organised voice in the fancy.
That belief was perhaps most clearly demonstrated in 1983, when Barney personally funded the SQBBA’s entry to the A.N.B.C. Nationals in Melbourne. Without that extraordinary act, the Zone would have been forced to wait another five years before appearing on the National stage. For South Queensland fanciers, that decision wasn’t just a financial contribution — it was a defining moment. It ensured the Zone could step forward, be represented, and belong in the National conversation when it mattered.
Barney’s service at the National level was both substantial and sustained. From 1982 to 1995, he served as the SQBBA Delegate to the A.N.B.C., representing South Queensland at the table where the future of the hobby is shaped. He was also elected as one of five inaugural National Judges Examiners, serving a three-year term in a role that requires knowledge, integrity, and the confidence of peers across Australia.
His leadership continued with election as President of the A.N.B.C. in 1992, a position that reflects not only capability, but the respect of the broader National community. While work commitments prevented him from serving in 1993, his contribution and standing remained clear.
At home in South Queensland, Barney was the kind of leader clubs rely on — the person who steps into the roles that need doing, again and again, to keep things moving. Across the years 1982–1995, he served on numerous occasions as President, Show Manager, and Selector for SQBBA, taking on the jobs that demand time, steadiness, and a willingness to carry pressure when it counts.
Alongside this service, he continued to support the Zone in the most practical way possible: by making his birds available, ensuring South Queensland was represented strongly at the Nationals — not just in name, but in quality.
For decades, Barney Hackney has given his time, his leadership, and—when it was needed most—his personal support to ensure South Queensland had a rightful place in the A.N.B.C. story. His service has helped shape opportunities for others, strengthened the organisation at multiple levels, and left a lasting mark on the fancy.
With gratitude for a lifetime of dedication, Mr. Barney Hackney is a most worthy inductee into the A.N.B.C. Inc. Hall of Fame – Service Division, recognised for his outstanding service to South Queensland and to the A.N.B.C. Inc.
