Hentley Farm Wines
Hentley Farm is a single-estate boutique winery nestled in the rolling hills of the western Barossa Valley. Known for its meticulous vineyard planning and modern winemaking techniques, Hentley Farm crafts elegant wines that showcase vibrant fruit, soft velvety tannins, and the intense flavour richness that reflects the character of its exceptional site.
🌿 The Beginning of a Vision
Established in 1997 by Keith and Alison Hentschke, Hentley Farm was born from a single vision: to produce outstanding single-estate wines from the Barossa. Keith, a Roseworthy College graduate in Agricultural Science and Wine Marketing, was awarded the Gramp Hardy Smith Memorial Prize for most outstanding student. He applied his knowledge and industry experience in pursuit of the perfect vineyard site.
With help from local winemakers and an old 1950s soil map, Keith discovered a mixed-farming property along the banks of Greenock Creek in Barossa’s west. The land offered remarkable diversity in soil, altitude, and aspect—ideal conditions for premium viticulture. In 2004, the estate expanded with a neighbouring vineyard, bringing the total estate to 150 acres.
🍇 A Scientific Approach to Winemaking
Keith’s scientific background guided him to first understand the land. Through collaboration with local viticulturalists and extensive soil analysis—digging 40 pits across the property—he uncovered unique microclimates and soil types. This led to the creation of nine distinct viticultural blocks, each further divided into sub-rows to reflect changes in soil and topography.
Plantings were strategically selected: Shiraz (70%), Grenache (17%), Cabernet Sauvignon (10%), Zinfandel (2%), and a small parcel of Viognier (0.5%). The first vintage was released in 2002.
🍷 The Winemaking Philosophy
Since 2008, Head Winemaker Andrew Quin has led the evolution of Hentley Farm wines. With a background in horticulture and vintages in France and the USA, Andrew brings a modern, minimal-intervention philosophy to traditional Barossa varietals. His approach focuses on balance, power, and elegance—allowing the vineyard to speak through every bottle.
Each block and sub-row is harvested at optimal ripeness, often across multiple picks. This precision continues in the winery, where careful handling results in wines with signature vibrancy, silky tannins, and intense flavour.
🏆 Global Recognition of Hentley Farm
Hentley Farm wines are approachable when young, yet structured for extended cellaring. Under Andrew’s guidance, the winery has earned widespread acclaim—including the prestigious title of James Halliday Winery of the Year in 2015.
Every vintage is a reflection of the estate’s unique terroir—limited in volume by the boundaries of the property and shaped by the season. Hentley Farm continues to share its story of place and passion with every bottle released.
