Australian National Budgerigar Council
Brian West
Induction into the A.N.B.C. Inc. Hall of Fame – Service Division
Every organisation has individuals whose work is not always seen on the show bench, but whose efforts shape the structure that allows the hobby itself to flourish. Brian West was one of those people. His contribution came not through a single moment, but through a period in which the foundations of the modern Australian budgerigar movement were being laid.
During the late 1970s and early 1980s, the concept of a national governing body for budgerigar competition in Australia was still evolving. The interstate teams competitions had already begun to unite breeders across state lines, but the growing scale of the event made it clear that a formal organisation was needed to administer rules, standards, and the future direction of the hobby. It was during this formative time that Brian West emerged as one of the key figures helping guide the process.
In 1981, representatives from across the country met during the interstate competition in Perth to establish the framework for what would become the Australian National Budgerigar Council. Brian West represented Queensland alongside Amon Murdock, joining delegates from every participating state and territory in what would become a pivotal meeting for the Fancy.
When the ANBC formally began operating, Brian West was elected as the organisation’s first Secretary, a role that placed him at the centre of the Council’s early administration and coordination. The first official meeting of the ANBC was held in Townsville in 1982, marking the start of the national governance structure that still underpins the ANBC today.
Brian’s involvement did not stop with the establishment of the Council. As the ANBC developed its policies and structures, he continued to contribute to key initiatives. In 1987 he joined the National Colour and Standard Committee to assist with the production and printing of the ANBC’s national standard, which was eventually published in 1990 and provided a unified reference point for exhibition budgerigars across Australia.
He also played a role in shaping the early framework for national judging accreditation. In 1990 he served on the first ANBC Judges Examining Panel alongside Harry Eady, Ron Hunt, Harold Cooper and Barney Hackney — a panel responsible for establishing the standards and processes that would qualify judges to officiate at ANBC Championship Shows.
Through these contributions, Brian West helped guide the transition of the budgerigar hobby in Australia from a collection of state-based activities into a coordinated national movement. The systems he helped establish — governance, standards, judging accreditation and national coordination — remain fundamental to the ANBC and the National Championship today.
Brian West’s service represents the spirit of dedication that has allowed the ANBC to thrive for decades. His work behind the scenes helped create the organisational backbone of the Australian budgerigar fancy, ensuring that future generations of breeders would have a strong and unified national stage on which to compete.
For this lasting contribution to the structure and development of the ANBC, Brian West is rightfully honoured with induction into the A.N.B.C. Inc. Hall of Fame – Service Division.
