ANBC Hall of Fame, Breeders Excellence Division Induction: 2008

Bob Smith Budgerigar BreederRenowned for his sharp eye and commitment to quality, Bob Smith of South Queensland was inducted into the Australian National Budgerigar Council (ANBC) Hall of Fame – Breeders Excellence Division in 2008. Across a highly successful exhibiting career, Bob amassed 10 national class wins, including a standout triple victory in 2006 and three more titles following his induction.

Bob’s first national win came in 2003 with a Yellowfaced, marking the beginning of a decade-long run of top-tier results. He backed this up with a Spangle Double Factor in 2005 before delivering a remarkable performance at the 2006 Nationals, where he claimed the Green, Grey Green and Opaline classes – a rare feat achieved by only a handful of fanciers. It is understood that even more impressive is that the three birds were from the same nest.

His 2008 wins in both the Green and Blue classes cemented his reputation as one of the most consistent and respected breeders in the country. Further success followed with a Grey Green in 2010, a Hens Class win in 2012, and a final national title in 2013 with another Green—showcasing the enduring quality of his stud.

Now retired, Bob’s legacy is remembered not only through his national achievements but also through the influence he had on pursing the modern face and feather length. He was widely respected for his honest and straightforward approach, his willingness to share knowledge, and his strong eye for selection. Bob’s contributions have left a lasting mark on the hobby, and his induction into the Breeders’ Excellence Hall of Fame serves as a fitting recognition of a dedicated and highly accomplished career in the fancy.

About the ANBC Hall of Fame

In May 2003, the A.N.B.C. Inc. establishes a prestigious ‘Hall of Fame’, launching its inaugural category titled ‘Breeder Excellence’. This division aims to honour breeders who achieve outstanding success at the ANBC National Competition Show. Importantly, national class wins from 1983 onwards are included in the tally.

The ‘Breeder Excellence’ award serves to formally recognise individual breeders or partnerships who demonstrate a significant and consistent contribution to the fancy. It not only celebrates the exhibition of budgerigars of the highest standard but also acknowledges sustained dedication and exceptional achievement in the competitive sphere of the hobby.

Each year, inductees are announced and presented with a certificate during the Presentation Dinner, held on the Sunday evening of the A.N.B.C. Inc. National Competition Show. This moment marks a public and prestigious recognition of their success.

Furthermore, eligibility for inclusion in the ‘Breeder Excellence’ division is determined by results in any variety class that qualifies for State or Zone points at the Nationals. To that end, exhibition-only classes are excluded from this consideration.

To qualify for induction into the Hall of Fame, Breeder Excellence Division, an exhibitor must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Win seven (7) classes across any variety, or
  • Win the same class on four (4) separate occasions.

Finally, this honour represents one of the highest forms of recognition within the Australian budgerigar fancy, celebrating those who continue to raise the bar in quality and commitment.
