Ray Slade of Victoria was proudly inducted into the ANBC Hall of Fame – Breeders Excellence Division in 2024, following a remarkable run of success at the ANBC National Show. With a total of seven national class wins, Ray’s record reflects his dedication to excellence and his impressive ability to produce top-tier birds across a range of competitive varieties.

Ray’s first national win came in 2016 with a Blackeyed Self Colour, a class known for its difficulty and exacting standard. He returned the following year to successfully defend his title in the same class, immediately establishing himself as a breeder of precision and consistency. After 2017, Ray relocated from South Australia to Victoria, and became an exhibiting member of the BCV.

After several years of dedication and development, Ray made a resounding impact at the 2022 Nationals with an extraordinary four class wins in a single year—claiming top honours in the Green, Grey, Violet, and Lacewing classes. This rare achievement highlighted not only the strength of his stud, but also his versatility and deep understanding of budgerigar breeding. Such a performance is seldom seen at the national level and firmly positioned Ray among the elite breeders in Australia. What makes this win even more impressive is that Ray only had 5 birds selected for the team, so 4 first, and a 2nd, finishing second only to himself, is effectively a perfect score at the ANBC.

In 2024, he added a second Grey class win to his record, bringing his total to seven and securing his well-earned place in the ANBC Hall of Fame.
