Richard Miller – 2026 ANBC Judge

I have been actively involved in the exhibition budgerigar fancy for 34 years since the age of 8. My time in the hobby has been a real blessing in my life, and I am so grateful for every moment I get to spend enjoying it.

My father and I have won Best in Show at the Budgerigar Society World Championship Show four times spanning 3 decades, which is more than any other breeder in the UK other than the late and great Harry Bryan. Our success in the hobby has enabled me to actively engage with breeders and exhibitors across the globe and in this ambassadorial role, I continue to do everything I can to promote the benefits of our hobby far and wide. The life skills I have learned along the way have played a huge part in my transition from being a shy and socially awkward young boy to developing my legal career to the point now where I am the Chairman of a regional law firm and the MD of our family’s commercial property business.

My judging experience spans numerous countries including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Ireland, Germany, Holland, Kuwait, Sweden and the USA. I have also enjoyed delivering lectures in these locations and delivered online seminars remotely to many more. When judging an event, I do my utmost to uphold the basic ethos that exhibition budgerigars should possess charm, charisma and style. I try to be fair, consist, and completely open and transparent with my methodology and reasoning.

What started as a means of appeasing an 8-year-old boy who wanted a dog, has grown to be a means of meeting people from all over the world, from all walks of life and immersing myself in their cultures. Having already had the privilege of visiting your country in 2024 to be part of the wonderful “Budgie Fest”, it is a huge honour for me to be invited as one of the judges for the Nationals next year. I am incredibly excited to see the very best birds from across the country and taking part in a weekend that celebrates the skill, passion, and camaraderie that make our hobby so rewarding and truly unique.
