Australian National Budgerigar Council
BCSA Report May 2026
The month kicked off with the Murphy Classic Future Champions Show. The event attracted 215 entries, with almost full benching, and also featured the strongest response yet to the club’s Come & Try initiative. The day was praised for its organisation, strong participation, and the introduction of the Junior section, which marked an encouraging step forward for the development of new exhibitors.
In the major awards, Jane Kelb dominated the Intermediate section, while Dave Miller did the same in Novice. Darcie Osobase-Kelb took both Junior awards, providing another positive sign for the future of exhibiting in South Australia. Across the variety awards, winners included exhibitors such as Dave Miller, Paul Wilton, Peter Brumby, Jane Kelb, Pauline and Mark Lampre, Ian Jenke, Adam Pannell, Patrick O’Rourke and others, reflecting the broad spread of quality on display. Dave Miller also secured the Show Manager’s Novice Award for most accumulated points.

BSSA Monthly Meeting
BSSA members came together for an engaging and highly informative presentation from Wayne Weidenhofer and Kelwyn Kakoschke, focusing on White Cap, Australian Golden Faced, and Yellow Faced Blue varieties. The session explored the strategic thinking behind breeding programs, particularly how breeders introduce and “prove” an outcross is not split before carefully incorporating it into their lines. The discussion also unpacked key varietal characteristics, with insight into how different combinations can influence face colour and the level of suffusion through the body. As the conversation developed, it shifted into a broader and thought-provoking discussion on fertility as a trait worth selecting for, sparked by an insightful contribution from Vicki Sanford.
Overall, it was a valuable session, with a wealth of knowledge shared among those in attendance, reinforcing both the depth of expertise within the room and the importance of ongoing education in the hobby. As a side note, the BSSA dusted off the camera, and filmed the meeting, so the insights are available online for anyone who wasn’t able to attend in person. You can watch this using the link below.
NEBS Monthly Meeting
The North East Budgerigar Society (NEBS) also came together for a nostalgic evening, reflecting on the life and contributions of “Budgie” Bill Davis of Broken Hill. Now 86, Bill is a former President of the Budgerigar Council of South Australia and played a pivotal role in the early years of the Council. He oversaw its first ANBC National Show in 2000 at Morphettville Racecourse. Stories shared on the night traced Bill’s journey from catching wild budgerigars as a young boy to a defining visit with Stan Watson, which sparked a lifelong passion for the hobby. He fondly recalls his unwavering support of the fancy, regularly travelling from Broken Hill with both birds and fellow enthusiasts to compete and contribute at shows across South Australia. Bill’s legacy in the hobby also extends to his role in sourcing and supplying grit. What began as a small provision to Peter Glassenbury soon grew into a supply network that reached fanciers across the country. The evening also served as a collection point for the NEBS April Mega Sale, drawing a strong turnout of more than 20 fanciers. Congratulations to Stephen Wharton, who took home the meat tray, rounding out a great night.
Judges Meeting
The month also featured our Annual Judges Meeting. This brought our judging panel together for an important session of alignment and open discussion. As a group, we addressed several key areas, including presentation and consistency, with a clear focus on continuing to lift standards across the board. A major highlight from the day was the unanimous endorsement of our new judges’ uniform. The updated look featuring grey tops, dark trousers, and a black sleeveless vest will provide a more professional and consistent appearance in the judging area. Importantly, the vote on the new uniform was unanimous. We’re also pleased to announce that Trill™ has come on board to sponsor the new judges’ kit. Their support is greatly appreciated and will play an important role in enhancing the presentation of our panel moving forward.
The meeting also included a practical component, with a selection of “odd” birds and various varieties presented for discussion. These sessions continue to be invaluable, allowing judges to share perspectives, refine interpretations of The Standard, and strengthen overall consistency. Thank you to those who contributed birds for review.
A further positive outcome was the unanimous vote of confidence in John Mulley as Judges Coordinator. John has done an outstanding job in developing a structured and progressive training program for our judges, while also serving as a key point of contact for judging matters within South Australia. With strong alignment, clear direction, and great support behind us, we are hoping for great things at the Logan Shield in a month’s time.

30th Anniversary
We also marked a significant milestone in April, celebrating the BCSA 30th Anniversary at the Max Amber Community Centre. The event brought together members from across the state for a day that blended reflection, connection, and a shared appreciation for the hobby. From the outset, there was a strong sense that this was more than just a celebration, it was a recognition of the people, moments, and milestones that have shaped the BCSA since its formation in 1996. Original minute books were there from the very beginning, along with Budgie Bulletins from the North East, Digests from the BSSA, and magazines from clubs like Central Districts and Adelaide Plains, along with some Budgie News and Budgie World Magazines from each era.
Nic Hayes and Graeme Goodings expertly guided attendees through the Council’s formative years, revisiting key moments in South Australia’s budgerigar history. Particular attention was given to the years the BCSA proudly hosted the ANBC National Championships, being 2000, 2007, 2014, and most recently 2022. Their reflections also extended to the evolving media landscape, contrasting the early days of radio and print coverage with today’s digital-first environment in 2026, highlighting how the hobby continues to adapt and grow.
The day was filled with positive feedback from members, reinforcing the success of the celebration. Susan Adams shared, “Had a lovely time celebrating the 30th Birthday of the Budgerigar Council of SA today with budgie friends from SA with lunch & drinks. Nic Hayes & Graeme Goodings shared memories from the last 30 years of radio & TV & events from the past years. Great memories were shared!”
Angela Van Den Brink described it simply as “a fantastic day,” while Ian Wise added, “Thanks to the BCSA for a great event. Here’s to the next 30 years.” Patrick O’Rourke echoed the sentiment, saying, “Happy 30th Birthday BCSA! Thank you for a great day,” and Ken Harris summed up the effort behind the scenes: “Excellent day—what a lot of work. Well done to all.”
One of the standout initiatives from the event was the creation of a time capsule, designed to be opened at the BCSA’s 50th Anniversary in 2046. Members recorded video messages capturing their passion for the hobby, their hopes for its future, and what they believe should remain unchanged about this great hobby. A consistent theme emerged, that budgerigars are far more than birds; they are the catalyst for lifelong friendships, shared purpose, and community. For some, it was a chance to reflect on what the hobby has given them, while others focused on inspiring the next generation to carry it forward.
