Ian Ainley: A Lifetime of Dedication, Quality and Quiet Respect

Few names in the United Kingdom budgerigar fancy carry the same sense of experience, consistency and quiet authority as Ian Ainley. Now in his 51st year in the hobby, Ian’s involvement began at the age of 13 when his father, a retired dairy farmer, encouraged him to find a hobby. With canaries already being bred by his father and racing pigeons kept by his brother, Ian found his own path through budgerigars — a path that would go on to shape more than five decades of achievement, friendship and dedication.

Today, Ian is in partnership with his son Scott and his best friend Geoff Tuplin. Over the years he has also previously partnered with Scott alone, as well as with another friend, Mick Freakley. His current birdroom is a converted garage containing 24 breeding cages and a large flight, supported by a wooden side extension with a further 12 cages and another flight. It is a practical, focused set-up, built around careful management rather than unnecessary complication.

Ian is predominantly a breeder of Normal birds, with his great passion lying in Normal Grey and Dominant Pied Grey. He also keeps Normal Greygreens, Normal Skyblues and a strong family of Normal Cinnamons. Within the partnership, Scott specialises in Inos, while Geoff has no particular preference when it comes to colour or variety, giving the team a broad and balanced approach.

His bloodlines trace back to birds from his early mentor Bernard Kellet and Dave Topliss. Ian has always maintained two very specific family lines, working closely within them and only using outcrosses when a precise quality is required. This disciplined approach has been central to his success and reflects his belief that progress in the hobby requires patience, planning and a clear vision of the type of bird one is trying to breed.

Across more than 50 years, Ian can still narrow his finest birds down to a select few. Among them are a Normal Skyblue cock and a Dominant Pied Greygreen cock, both National winners that Ian believes were ahead of their time in feather quality. Another standout was a Dominant Pied Opaline Greygreen hen, Best Opposite Sex in Show at the National, which Ian describes simply as “an absolute beauty of a hen.” He also recalls a Normal Grey cock, twice winner of the prestigious Gwynedd Show, and a Spangle Grey cock, another Gwynedd winner and beautiful show bird. Excitingly, Ian believes there may now be a sixth bird worthy of joining that list — a young Normal Cinnamon Grey cock.

Ian’s favourite moments in the hobby include winning the National Show two years running, an achievement that sits proudly among his many years of work. Just as importantly, however, he values the friendships and experiences that come through aviary visits with Geoff, both in the UK and across Europe. There are still several birdrooms of interest he has not yet visited, including that of Ali Bouresli in Kuwait, and in Australia, those of his good friend Joel Keune, Gary Gazzard, Mark Fellows and Troy Holmes.

Advice for Breeders

When asked for advice to those wanting to progress in the hobby, Ian is practical and direct. He believes it depends on one’s aspirations, but for those wanting success on the show bench, he recommends visiting the top shows, touring aviaries to study stock type and management, and identifying at least two breeders who have the style of bird you admire. From there, he suggests acquiring a couple of pairs from each breeder and building with purpose.

Management, Health and Feeding

His views on management are equally clear. In Ian’s opinion, fertility and good health come from clean management, sensible stocking levels and avoiding overcrowding. Prior to pairing, he uses a product called Perform, although he stops once fertile eggs are observed. His yearly medication plan includes Exzolt every three months, Ronivet S every three months, S76 on the last weekend of every month for three days, and Baytril only for sick birds requiring treatment.

Feeding is also handled with consistency. Ian uses Ali Bouresli’s seed mixture, soft food mix, dry egg food, Pro Breeder with groats and minerals, salad cress, carrots, sweetcorn, mixed herbs, bee pollen and probiotics. His water programme includes two days of Aviform vitamins, one day of calcium, one day of Orego-Stim, and plain bottled water on the remaining days. Each cage also has two finger drawers, containing mineral mixture and Thrive On mixture.

Respect for the Hobby

What stands out most about Ian is not only the success, but the respect he has for others. He holds “the utmost respect” for the hard workers in the hobby, noting that without them, there would not be a hobby at all. He also deeply respects the breeders who, year after year, show the dedication and skill required to continually breed top birds.

Away from the Birdroom

Away from the birdroom, Ian’s other hobby is helping his 14-year-old granddaughter with her horse. His favourite meal is fillet steak and chips, his favourite series is Game of Thrones, and his sporting loyalty rests with his local football team, Rochdale.

Ian Ainley’s story is one of family, friendship, careful breeding and long-term commitment. More than five decades after his father first encouraged him into a hobby, Ian remains a breeder who values quality, discipline and respect — the qualities that continue to make him such an admired figure within the international budgerigar fancy.
