Australian National Budgerigar Council
SQBBA March 2026
SQBBA March Report 2026
The show season has officially kicked off across South Queensland, with Morton, ABS and Bundaberg all holding successful shows throughout February. It’s always an exciting time of year, as exhibitors begin unveiling their young birds, each one carrying the promise of last season’s carefully planned pairings. There’s a real sense of anticipation in the air, as breeders search for that standout youngster that might develop into something truly special on the show bench.
On the National Show front, registrations are already beginning to roll in, and early indications suggest we’re on track for a strong and healthy turnout at the 50th Annual Trill™ Expert ANBC National Championships. The milestone event is building momentum, and it’s encouraging to see fanciers keen to be part of what will no doubt be a memorable celebration of our great hobby.
In preparation for the 50th, I’ve been requesting photographs from previous Nationals, and some of the images that have come through have been remarkable. They offer a wonderful glimpse into how far the National Show has evolved over the years. From the early days, when bird holding areas consisted of a simple tin aviary and birds from each zone were flown together, to today’s well-organised setup featuring dedicated holding cages per zone, the progression is clear. The professionalism and presentation of our premier event has grown enormously.
The photographs also provide something equally special, a snapshot of our fanciers in years gone by. Some breeders may just recognise their younger selves in these images… and perhaps even raise an eyebrow at the fashion choices of the time! I’m sure a few grandchildren would be surprised at just how “on trend” their grandparents once were.
A special mention must go to Ron Hunt, who has kindly sent through several historic photographs originally taken on 35mm film and carefully converted for us to use. Preserving and sharing this history is invaluable, and Ron’s contribution helps ensure that the story of our Nationals continues to be told.
Moreton Budgerigar Association Show
Moreton Show Report by Wayne Weidenhofer
When I received a call with an invitation to judge in Queensland from a longtime friend (Garry Menzies) who speak regularly but hadn’t seen each other since the Hobart Nationals some 8 years previous it was given serious consideration. Consideration because I had 30 pairs of budgies breeding along with Lorikeets and I had been lucky that my fourth generation Grandson and my wife excelled in completing the duties when he finished high school for the day. It was certainly appreciated.
He has a sensational appetite to absorb information and has named various birds such as the Danny and Brett Card Spangle purchased in the Moreton auction last year as “Big Dog” of the stud. Him and his father (Jason) have created a second breeding establishment with some laughable nicknames being created.
When I arrived Saturday afternoon Garry was standing by the baggage carousel expecting a suitcase but there was no need because all I thought I needed was the judge’s uniform, shirt, shorts and thongs and I would fit into Queensland life. Humidity was different to our very hot dry heat we experience.
On arrival at the show venue there were numerous dedicated members setting up the lightweight staging and the kitchen. Pizza tea was supplied to the 30-35 attendees for the presentation which went ahead without the projector working to incorporate 40 photos. There was plenty of interaction, discussion on ANBC Standard pictorials, line and in breeding to nest box setup, vitamins and AI. The positive feedback was very much appreciated.
Being the first budgerigar show for the year there was plenty of vibrant support and exhibitors with 8 clubs represented, 40 plus people and a total of 440 birds entered. Outstanding show venue with plenty of lighting for the judges. All this couldn’t be possible without the excellent website publicity by Kara Henderson. We seem to be challenged in SA by not being able to travel from one side of Adelaide to the other for a budgerigar show.
The show computer system run by Carlos Whyllie was an absolute winner with all the manual handling all but gone. Everything was locked and loaded for the iPad stewards to use. A big thank you to the kitchen staff who are the unsung heroes on show days and who usually miss recognition.
The show is operated completely different with Young, Old and UBC shows in SA whereas here they are incorporated together. In SA judges judge from the floor with the best birds migrating to the front for the major awards which is either a top 10 or top 7 for the BSSA. Having been the BSSA show manager for 10 years I was all eyes and ears for our current show manager. Stewards presenting classes to the judges watched on by the audience is less complicated.
Champion Young Bird was a Normal Grey with good deportment and size, width of shoulder with a deep wide mask and large spots in excellent condition. He had the correct wing carriage with the shield. Champion Opposite Sex was a super Crested Greywing Skyblue with good size and shoulder, excellent wing with a deep wide mask and spots. She had a large full circular crest and presented in excellent condition. Champion Old bird was a white Spangle Double Factor with soft modern feather and a worthy winner. Congratulations to the winners in each individual section and Moreton for acknowledging Intermediate and Novice Best of Variety awards.
Two areas of concern were the back toes advancing forward which will be a problem in the breeding room if not controlled as it will become permanently forward and a disqualification for a show. The second area of concern was open back birds with the secondaries sticking up which I call shark fins. They are a long-flighted bird without the tight flights and shield and an area which needs addressing again in the breeding room.
The aviary visits to Lyn and Errol Miller’s was exceptional across all varieties. It showed a lot of time, money and effort has gone into this stud. Glen and Lyn Ryan’s Recessive Pieds were a standout and a credit to them with the dedication put into the variety and the modern feathering across just not one bird. They always say it’s a numbers game and that’s where most of us go wrong by having a few varieties of each. The Bundaberg home of “Big Dog” and Danny and Brett Card’s establishment shone bright with quality modern faced birds mainly in the Spangles. Brett’s knowledge and expertise is exceptional.
I cast my eye over the Menzies establishment and Fallows could become the stronghold in a very short period of time along with Greywings. Also a big thank you to Gerard Griffiths for an aviary visit before the plane left.
The hospitality and friendships made in a short period of time will be remembered for a long time to come and thank you to the Moreton Budgerigar Association for a truly memorable visit.

Budgerigar Society of Bundaberg Annual Show Results
Sunday 22nd February 2026
Although entry numbers were modest, the quality of birds on display more than compensated. From Novice through to Open, the standard was consistently strong, with many exhibits demonstrating excellent type, feather and presentation.
It was particularly pleasing to see the continued improvement in the Novice section. The quality being produced by newer breeders is a real credit to their dedication and the support within the club. Their progress is clearly evident and bodes well for the future strength of the fancy.
A memorable highlight during judging was something I have not previously encountered — the final four birds for Grand Champion included both a mother and daughter, each Spangle Yellow Faced Greys, and a father and son, both Normal Greys. It was especially rewarding to see the younger birds prevailing over their parents, a true reflection of progressive breeding and careful selection.
Beyond these standout exhibits, there were many other notable birds across the benches, including an outstanding Normal Grey Green, quality Golden Faced, impressive Crested, and strong Cinnamonwings, among others. The depth across several varieties was commendable.
It is always a pleasure to judge at this venue, and I consider it a genuine honour to be invited to officiate at the club’s events.
