Phoenix Budgerigar Society
The Phoenix Budgerigar Society affiliated with the Budgerigar Council of Victoria (BCV) in February 2023. From its inception, the Society chose not to hold local club shows, instead focusing its energy on participating in the BCV Young Bird Shield. The aim has always been to represent Victoria at the prestigious Trill™ Expert ANBC Championship Shows.
BCV Young Bird Shield
The BCV Young Bird Shield is judged from 1st to 20th for points. A 1st place bird receives 20 points, 2nd receives 19 points, and so on down to 1 point for the 20th placed bird.
- 2023 Debut: Phoenix entered the BCV Young Bird Shield for the first time in May 2023. With only two members exhibiting and limited preparation, the club was delighted to achieve 3rd place overall against 16 other clubs, scoring 627 points. United placed 1st with 714 points and Eastern came 2nd with 641 points.
- 2024 Triumph: Determined to improve, Phoenix expanded its breeding program to cover all varieties. This effort paid off when Phoenix won the BCV Young Bird Shield in 2024, achieving 788 points. United placed 2nd with 675 points, and Geelong placed 3rd with 556 points, with a total of 18 clubs competing.
- 2025 Consistency: Phoenix repeated its success by winning again in 2025 against 17 other clubs, scoring 796 points. Riverina followed with 631 points, and Eastern was next with 564 points—proving the club’s depth, dedication, and consistency.
Trill™ Expert ANBC Championship Shows
- Over the three-year period, Phoenix birds have consistently been selected to represent Victoria at the Trill™ Expert ANBC Championship Shows, with a total of 48 birds selected — 12 in 2023, 18 in 2024, and 18 in 2025. Twelve selections represent a little more than 14% of the BCV team, and eighteen selections are a fraction over 21%.
- Five birds have gone on to win their class, with five achieving second and six achieving third placings — a remarkable achievement for such a young club.
- Moreover, these results highlight the strength of Phoenix’s breeding program and the determination of its exhibitors.
Dedication
Phoenix’s success has been driven by the dedication of Jeffrey Leong and Ali Humadi, who continue to inspire and lead the Society to new heights. While only these two members currently exhibit, others are working on their own breeding programs with the aim of contributing birds in the coming years.
Annual General Meetings
The Phoenix Budgerigar Society values camaraderie as much as competition, reflecting the culture of the club. Finally, Annual General Meetings are held at restaurants of choice, reflecting members’ shared enjoyment of good food and good company.

- National representation: Over the three-year period, Phoenix birds have been consistently selected for the Trill™ Expert ANBC Championship Shows. Multiple selections and placings are a significant achievement for such a young club.
