New Zealand Show Season Update
Show season is in full swing across the North and South Islands
Show season is in full swing here in New Zealand. At the time of writing, we have had three shows in the North Island and two in the South Island.
Dunedin Opens the Season
The first show of the season was held in Dunedin, where 104 benched budgies went toe to toe.
The G & L Haywood partnership came out on top, with last year’s national-winning CYCR Light Green Spangle Cock taking the top honours.
They also picked up Best CYCR with a Grey Green Spangle Cock.
Auckland Metro
Next up was Auckland Metro, where 103 benched budgies were whittled down to one winner.
A powerful Normal Grey Cock from the A & R Grinter stud was awarded the top honour.
L & A Dagg, brand new Champions this year, took out Reserve Champion and Best CYCR with a great Normal Light Green Cock.
Wairarapa Show
Next, two shows were held on the same weekend. In the North Island, Wairarapa hosted its show in what is not traditionally a large budgie area.
There were 43 benched budgies, a strong increase from the 14 benched last year.
M & L Podjursky’s lovely Normal Yellow Face Dominant Pied Cock was crowned Champion.
Best CYCR was awarded to Brenda Berge with a very solid Olive Hen.
Ashburton Show
In the South Island, Ashburton attracted 97 benched budgies.
The Brown and Winfield partnership topped the show with a strong Light Green Spangle.
Best CYCR was taken out by rising Novice Matthew Morgan with a lovely Opaline Grey Green Hen.
A great result from Matthew indeed.
Whakatane Show
Finally, last weekend at Whakatane, 37 budgies were benched.
John Rosser won Best Bird and Best CYCR with an Opaline Grey Green Dominant Pied Cock.
Coming Up This Weekend
This coming weekend, there will again be a show in each island, with Christchurch hosting one event and the Auckland Budgie Club holding its premier show.
Craig Buckingham will be judging at the Auckland Budgie Club premier show.
