Western Australia Builds Momentum Ahead of the Nationals

Western Australia enjoyed a quieter month on the budgerigar calendar in May, with attention firmly focused on preparations for the 2026 Nationals. Despite a lighter schedule, enthusiasm and participation remained strong across the state’s affiliated clubs.

The month began with a successful table show hosted by The Rare Budgerigar Club of WA on May 2, followed by the highly anticipated Nationals Pre-Selection Show held on May 16 at the Metropolitan Budgerigar Club of WA.

Hosted annually by one of the affiliated clubs of the Western Australian Budgerigar Council (WABC), the Pre-Selection Show plays a vital role in forming the Western Australian team for the 50th Annual Trill™ Expert ANBC National Titles. Unlike larger eastern states that may hold multiple selection events, Western Australia conducts a single statewide pre-selection show, inviting members from all affiliated clubs to compete for a place on the national team.

This year’s event attracted an impressive 214 bird entries, resulting in WA once again fielding a full national team across every class. A panel comprising all of Western Australia’s senior judges undertook the enormous responsibility of selecting the top three birds in each variety, along with a reserve bird for every class.

The cooperative spirit among the judges was a highlight of the event, with their dedication and professionalism ensuring a smooth and successful selection process. Their efforts were greatly appreciated by exhibitors and organisers alike.

Western Australia was once again strongly represented at the 50th Annual Trill™ Expert ANBC National Championships, expertly hosted by SQBBA. It was encouraging to see exhibitors from across all levels — Novice, Intermediate, and Open — proudly representing the state on the national stage.

A standout achievement came from Norm Wheatley, who claimed two prestigious Logie awards and earned induction into the Hall of Fame. Congratulations to Norm on this remarkable accomplishment.

WA exhibitors also received excellent feedback from the carers, who were extremely pleased with the presentation and condition of the birds sent from the west. Combined with several strong results on the show bench, it was another successful national campaign for Western Australia.

Looking ahead, June promises a busy and exciting month with several events scheduled, including another table show from The Rare Budgerigar Club of WA, the South West Budgerigar Club of WA Annual Championship Show, and the Metropolitan Budgerigar Club of WA Annual Auction.
