Tasmanian Budgerigar Society – Garden Show

The Tasmanian Budgerigar Society held a small club get-together on Sunday, 18 October 2026, at the residence of Jim and Judy Fletcher in Sorell.

Club members arrived between 11.00 am and 11.30 am, where we were greeted by a beautiful sunny day, clear blue skies and temperatures around 26 degrees. It was perfect weather for a relaxed gathering among friends.

While our partners enjoyed a catch-up, those of us who are budgie mad took the opportunity to stroll through the Fletchers’ garden.

Fruit trees were in abundance, with many already beginning to bear fruit, while the numerous vegetable varieties Jim had planted were a testament to his love of gardening. One thing that particularly stood out was the impressive selection of tomato varieties Jim had potted up, ready to transplant into their final positions in the new garden patch. I certainly know where I’ll be looking for a tomato or two!

We then made our way into the Fletchers’ breeding room to check on the progress of this year’s breeding season.

As the door opened, we were greeted by Jim’s latest purchase, an NCA custom cage, positioned in the middle of the room. Jim explained that it was an excellent choice for his ageing knees, removing the need to bend down when handling the birds.

With several resting birds enjoying the flight, it was easy to appreciate the advantages of this style of cage. The ability to view the birds from all angles, with practically 360-degree visibility, along with the ease of access, certainly makes these cages an excellent option.

There were also several breeding pairs still in the cabinets, finishing off a round of breeding. This provided a great opportunity for discussions about pairings, different variety combinations and the progress of the current breeding season.

Once the aviary discussions were complete, it was time to fire up the barbecue, relax and enjoy a good feed.

As always, the conversations continued well beyond the birds, covering everything from budgerigars and breeding to the latest happenings in politics!

It was a wonderful club day, thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who attended. Our sincere thanks go to Jim and Judy Fletcher for their generous hospitality and for opening their home, garden and breeding room to fellow members.
