Gold Standard Breeding Programme for Exhibition Budgerigars
Dr Rob Marshall – Carlingford Animal Hospital
We have found that commercial vitamin A and vitamin D supplements currently available do not provide the levels required to meet the extraordinary nutritional demands of reproduction in exhibition budgerigars.
We have developed ZADE Liquid to restore and maintain reproductive success throughout the breeding season.
ZADE is a potent vitamin A, D and E concentrate formulated for reproductive support and for the treatment of diseases associated with vitamin A and D deficiencies.
Addressing Reproductive Problems
ZADE is recommended for studs that are experiencing reproductive failures involving:
- Infertility
- Dead-in-shell embryos
- Baby deaths between one and five days of age
- Offspring that fail to thrive
It is also beneficial during the egg-laying cycle for the prevention of egg binding and the sudden death of hens resulting from hypoglycaemia.
These two common reproductive disorders relate to the combined effects of insufficient vitamin A intake and inadequate exposure to direct sunshine.
Supporting Vitamin Levels and Immune Function
ZADE Liquid, in combination with mineral supplements and direct sunlight, supports the increased requirements for vitamin A, vitamin D and calcium during the reproductive cycle, promoting normal gut function and heightened immunity.
For exhibition budgerigars, this immune-stimulating function is used to help prevent deficiency-related opportunistic infections, including:
- Macrorhabdus ornithogaster – Megabacteria or Avian Gastric Yeast (AGY)
- Polyomavirus – French Moult
- Staphylococcus infections – including Red Eye Disease and Yellow Belly in babies
- Chlamydia psittaci – subclinical Psittacosis infections
Maintaining Vitamin Reserves During Breeding
Following the Winter Pre-Breeding Cleansing Programme, ZADE Liquid is incorporated into the Gold Standard Breeding Programme once a week to maintain optimal liver reserves of vitamin A and provide the necessary level of vitamin D to promote the full absorption of dietary calcium.
This level of supplementation is intended to satisfy the increased demands for these vitamins during breeding, resulting in sustained parental vigour in breeding pairs, enhanced male fertility and the development of strong, healthy and disease-resistant offspring.
ZADE Liquid may be given for an additional day when breeding starts or continues into the colder or hotter months of the year, to protect against the negative impact of temperature extremes on fertility and breeding success.
Gold Standard Breeding Programme
A Seven-Day Nutritional Support Schedule
The following weekly programme combines supplements in drinking water with nutritional additions to seed or soft food. It is designed to support the increased nutritional demands of exhibition budgerigars throughout the breeding season.
Gold Standard Breeding Programme – Weekly Schedule
| Day | In Drinking Water | On Seed or in Soft Food Mix |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | KD Powder | Turbobooster, E Powder & Fvite |
| Day 2 | ZADE Liquid | Turbobooster, E Powder & Fvite |
| Day 3 | Fresh water Optional ZADE Liquid when breeding continues into summer or winter* |
Turbobooster, E Powder & Fvite |
| Day 4 | Dufoplus, Ioford, Quikgel & HiCal | Turbobooster, E Powder & Fvite |
| Day 5 | Fresh water | Turbobooster, E Powder & Fvite |
| Day 6 | Fresh water | Turbobooster, E Powder & Fvite |
| Day 7 | Fresh water | Turbobooster, E Powder & Fvite |
* The additional ZADE Liquid day is described as an option when breeding continues into the colder winter or hotter summer months. Supplementation should be undertaken according to appropriate veterinary advice.
Continuing the Programme Throughout the Breeding Season
Following the pre-breeding loading dose, ZADE Liquid is incorporated into the Breeding Programme and added to the drinking water for one day each week throughout the breeding season.
The overall effect of this addition to the Breeding Programme is intended to promote exceptional breeding outcomes by sustaining optimal vitamin A and D levels, which enhance fertility, egg quality and embryo vitality, and promote energetic feeding of the young until fledging age.
This system of vitamin A and D supplementation follows a weekly plan that continues throughout the entire breeding season.
Key Message
The Gold Standard Breeding Programme is designed to support the increased nutritional demands of exhibition budgerigars during reproduction, with particular attention to maintaining vitamin A and vitamin D reserves, supporting parental vigour and promoting healthy offspring throughout the breeding season.
Veterinary Note: This article presents Dr Rob Marshall’s nutritional supplementation programme and product recommendations. These recommendations should not be taken as a substitute for individual veterinary assessment. Vitamin supplementation, particularly vitamins A and D, should be undertaken carefully, as excessive intake can be harmful. Suspected reproductive disorders or infectious diseases should be investigated by a qualified avian veterinarian.
