It can sometimes be difficult to find topics to report on during the colder winter months in Victoria, when there is relatively little happening. With shows virtually non-existent and only the occasional club meeting taking place, activity is generally fairly quiet.

The auction season, however, has been a very different story, continuing the strong momentum throughout July with a further two affiliate clubs staging successful live events.
The Bendigo Budgerigar Club hosted its Annual Auction on Sunday 12 July at the Lockwood South Hall, followed by the Melton & District Budgerigar Society’s Annual “Blue Ribbon” Auction on Saturday 18 July.

With more than 400 birds offered across the two events, there was an excellent opportunity for fanciers to introduce new bloodlines into their respective aviaries. Many quality birds were presented, representing a broad spectrum of varieties across the matrix. Both auctions were well supported by those attending in person, while interstate buyers also participated via telephone bidding.

There were birds available to suit every budget and every level of interest—from the backyard hobbyist looking to add some colourful birds to their aviary, through to the dedicated exhibition breeder searching for the next key bird to strengthen their breeding program, and everything in between.

Pleasingly, every lot found a new home. While many birds remained in Victoria, a significant number were freighted interstate to begin a new chapter in different aviaries around the country.

Looking Ahead – What’s Next?

The month ahead continues at full steam, with more auction action still to come.

On Sunday 16 August, the Western Suburbs Budgerigar Society will conduct its “Premier” Auction at the Werribee Masonic Hall. By the time you’re reading this, the catalogue should either have been released or be only days away. It will be available on the BCV website, as well as across various budgerigar Facebook pages. The auction flyer is also included with this report, providing full event details and contact information.

The following weekend, the United Budgerigar Society will host its Annual Auction at its hall, located at 21 Memorial Drive, Plenty. As with the Western Suburbs auction, the catalogue is expected to be available around the same time. At the time of writing, no auction flyer had been released.
