Australian National Budgerigar Council
BSNSW Jan 2026
Message from the BSNSW President Jan 2026
As the year winds down, and we step into 2026, I would like to send a heartfelt thanks to our members and fellow fanciers for their support and commitment to the BSNSW and the hobby. Your passion for budgerigars and participation in your individual Club meetings and shows throughout 2025 help build our budgerigar community.
At BSNSW level I acknowledge and appreciate all the incredible contributions throughout the year by our office-bearers. I am very fortunate to work with such a strong team of amazing people that just get on and do what needs to be done.
Well done to our NSW Affiliated Clubs for the vital role they play in supporting their members by fostering a social connection and sense of belonging and providing a space for like-minded individuals to meet and bond over shared budgerigar interests. A few of our clubs do a really, really good job at that!
The State Team Challenge saw all our members and Clubs come together to find the best budgies from across the state of NSW, with Newcastle Club taking out top honours this year.
The following week at the 2025 Trill™ ANBC National Show, NSW came second to Victoria (again)! Huge congratulations to BSNSW members that won gold logies: Dave Dunn (D.A.D Budgerigars) – Normal Blue, Chris Rogers (C & E Rogers) – Normal Violet and Dilute, Anthony Starcevic – Spangle Double Factor and Craig Barnett – Opaline AOSV. A big shout out to NSW Team Carers who play such an important role in making our team of birds look their best.
Special mention to Craig Buckingham who sat and passed the National Judges’ exam. He now joins Gary Gazzard as our only two current ANBC nationally qualified judges.
The BSNSW’s Premier Annual Show was run in October, with Dave Dunn (D.A.D Budgerigars taking out Grand Champion with a Normal Blue. It was such an honour at this event for both myself and our Judges’ Panel Chairman, Craig Buckingham to present Recognition and Appreciation Awards to true stalwarts of the BSNSW for their decades of service to the Society and the hobby, who were also all retired budgerigar judges; Jean Painter, Warren Wilson, Ron Hunt (and Geoff Wood who was unable to attend on the day).
I truly must thank everyone who supported the show either by way of sponsorship or exhibiting. We were blessed with such incredible support from major sponsors including Vale Head Residents Association, Gaahna Bula Association, Craig Buckingham, Mars Birdcare with their Trill TM, products, Inca Flight (Ornithon) and BRASEA, as well as so many individual members and Affiliated Clubs. Thank you all.
In November our Management Committee and Club delegates voted (by a large majority) to host the 2027 ANBC Trill™ National Show at the Rex Hotel in Canberra. NSW had initially booked EPIC Canberra, but most thought the Rex provided a superior and more desirable “all in one” premium venue for the show as well as accommodation. Dan Scheerer has taken on the role of Coordinator for the 2027 ANBC Trill™ National Show, and I know he will appreciate lots of support from as many people as possible to assist with putting together and showcasing an absolutely fabulous event.
By now everyone has received their 2026 rings, thanks to our Ring Registrar, Donna Palmer’s herculean effort. Due to a problem with Coditech’s lasering machine, Donna did not receive the NSW rings until the very week they were due out!
During the Christmas season please remember the most precious gift you can give is time. When you give of your time, you give a little of yourself and a part of your life to others. Time in the service of others is what defines a true member. I extend my very best wishes to all our members and their families for a Merry Christmas, and a safe, bright and prosperous New Year.
