NSW Shows and Member Participation
It has been particularly encouraging to see our affiliated clubs continuing to provide opportunities for members to exhibit their birds and enjoy the camaraderie that makes our hobby so special. The New England Budgerigar Club’s Young and Juvenile Show in September attracted 156 birds from 17 exhibitors, with Jupp & Scheerer taking out both Champion Young Bird and Champion Juvenile Bird. More recently, St George and Illawarra came together for their combined Young Bird Show at Bexley on 18th October. Congratulations to everyone involved in organising these events, particularly the volunteers who contribute so much behind the scenes. Their dedication is essential to keeping the exhibition side of our hobby active and thriving.
Avian Influenza and Biosecurity
With H5 avian influenza continuing to be detected in wild birds across NSW, I would also like to remind members of the importance of maintaining good biosecurity practices. While there have been no reported detections in captive birds or commercial poultry in NSW, we must remain vigilant. Simple precautions such as preventing contact with wild birds, quarantining new additions to our aviaries, and maintaining clean cages and equipment are particularly important. As we continue to enjoy our club activities and exhibitions, the health and welfare of our birds must remain our highest priority. Members are encouraged to follow the latest advice from the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development.
Looking Towards Canberra 2027
With the National Championships now only months away, there is certainly a growing sense of anticipation surrounding Canberra 2027. The newly established ANBC Events Management Group represents an important step forward for the organisation of future National Championships, and it is encouraging that NSW is already benefiting from the group’s experience and expertise as our organising committee progresses with preparations. The Nationals are about far more than the competition itself; they provide an opportunity to bring together our budgerigar community from across Australia, celebrate the achievements of our breeders, and strengthen the friendships that make this hobby so rewarding. I encourage all members to support the event and make their arrangements early.
