BSNZ July Report 2026

The show season has continued through June here in NZ.

Christchurch was first up with 112 benched birds. Cole Hill came up trumps here winning Best in Show with a Normal Light Green AA cock and also best CYCR with a very nice Spangle Cinnamonwing Grey hen. This hen went on to win Best in Show at the BSNZ patronage show hosted this weekend just gone. This show was judged by Peter Thurn, who I’m sure will do a detailed article at some point.
Poverty Bay followed the weekend after Christchurch. Sadly numbers were down this year, with only 37 benched birds. Dave Ingoe’s Normal Grey cock winning Best Bird and D and G Morris winning BRDT CYCR with a Spangle Grey Green hen.

North Taranaki had 51 birds benched and was won by a very classy Normal Grey Green cock bred by S and E Duthie. M and L Podjursky took out best CYCR with a strong Cobalt cock.
Nelson was the same weekend as North Taranaki with 67 benched birds. Congratulations to the Novice partnership of Harper and Bryant who won Best in Show with a cracking CYCR Lacewing Yellow hen.

Tauranga was next, where 144 budgies were benched. This is always a great show. The Grinters 2025 National winner was too strong again, picking up Best in Show and another Larry and Anne Dagg Normal Light Green cock was best CYCR.

This past weekend Palmerston North had the misfortune of having their show the same weekend as the BSNZ patronage show at North Otago in the South Island. Most breeders were down south, but they still managed to bench 50 odd budgies with Calvin Appleby winning Best Bird with a Spangle Cinnamonwing Grey Green CYCR hen.
Besides Cole winning Best in Show at the patronage show, Robyn and Tony Grinter took out runner up with an AA Opaline Light Green cock and 3rd best with a fantastic Yellow Faced Grey who had to be marked down for flecking and a twisted tail.

Only two more regular shows before the National at the end of July.
