Judges Coordinator Report Oct 2026

The Reward of Judging

For those considering becoming a Judge, I encourage you to give it a go. Judging is an incredibly rewarding part of our hobby, but it does require commitment. You need to be passionate about the role, willing to learn, and patient with yourself, exhibitors, and the birds you are assessing. Like any worthwhile endeavour, becoming a competent and confident Judge takes time and experience.

One of the most valuable things an aspiring Judge can do is speak with and learn from experienced exhibitors, particularly those who have spent many years specialising in specific varieties. Their knowledge of breeding, presentation, and varietal characteristics can provide insights that cannot be gained from books alone.

Equally important is identifying a senior Judge whom you can trust and consult with regularly. Find someone who is prepared to provide honest feedback, both positive and negative. Constructive criticism is essential for development, and the best mentors are those who genuinely want to see you improve.

For those already working their way through State and Zone Judging systems, the same advice applies. Continue asking questions, seeking guidance, and challenging yourself to learn. Every judging appointment presents an opportunity to improve your knowledge, consistency, and confidence.

The reality is that even for senior Judges, these principles never change. We should all continue to learn, seek feedback, and expand our understanding. Regardless of experience, there is always something new to learn about our birds, our standards, and our judging technique. For those senior Judges considering sitting the ANBC Judges Examination, I encourage you to take that next step.

The ANBC panel benefits from experienced Judges who are prepared to challenge themselves and continue their development within the hobby. Judging at all levels is extremely rewarding. Whether it is a club night, a major club show, an inter-club competition, a State Championship, or ultimately the pinnacle of our hobby, the ANBC National Show, each appointment brings its own unique experiences and opportunities.

We should never lose sight of the fact that shows are primarily about the birds, the exhibitors, and the experience of our members. However, Judges play an important role in helping make these events successful. Through fair, consistent, and professional judging, we contribute to the enjoyment, education, and ongoing development of our hobby.

It is a privilege to judge at any show, at any level, and something that should never be taken for granted.
