NGC-DBS Celebrates 25 Years of Unity, Vision and Achievement

By Peter van Amelsvoort (NL)

The story of the NGC-DBS began in late 1999, when the first steps were taken towards a merger between the Nederlandse Parkieten Club (NGC) and the Budgerigar Society Holland. What began as a bold initiative to unite two organisations has grown into a significant chapter in Dutch budgerigar history. What started as a vision for the future of the Dutch budgerigar fancy became reality in 2002, with the official establishment of the NGC-DBS. The club’s statutes and regulations were subsequently formalised and notarised, laying a solid foundation for a new chapter in Dutch budgerigar breeding and exhibition.

A quarter of a century later, this shared history was celebrated in fitting style. On the traditional first weekend of September, the NGC-DBS held its 25th anniversary show in 2026 at the MFA building in Hapert, bringing together enthusiasts to mark 25 years of commitment, cooperation and passion for the budgerigar. Sunday’s programme was enriched by two presentations from respected speakers: Benno Löwik from the Netherlands and Dr Marcellus Bürkle from Germany, offering further opportunities for knowledge-sharing and discussion within the fancy.

Twenty-five years after its foundation, the NGC-DBS continues to celebrate the spirit of collaboration that brought the two clubs together, looking back with pride while embracing the future of the Dutch budgerigar fancy.

The Story Behind the NGC-DBS Award for Best INO

During the 2026 NGC-DBS Anniversary Show in Hapert, the prestigious Best INO Award was presented to Ard Veldt. A long-standing board member and true veteran of the association, Ard has always been a strong champion of this special incentive prize, which was created to promote and support specific colour mutations that deserve extra recognition.

What makes this award so unique is its extreme rarity: only four original statues exist.

  • The Artist: Designed and sculpted by artist Marijke Veldhuis.
  • Craftsmanship: Cast in high-quality resin by Tenax in Veghel.
  • Sponsorship: Because creating the moulds and casting resin statues is a costly process, the initiative required dedicated support. Marcel Boxebeld (www.birdsupply.nl) from Mariënheem committed as the official sponsor for a full decade, spanning from 2017 through 2026.

This combination of artistic design, craftsmanship, and long-term sponsorship makes the Best INO Award a truly exceptional honour within the bird-breeding community.
