Winter Shows Keep WA Budgerigar Scene Thriving

Three successful events across the state highlight the strength and enthusiasm of Western Australia’s budgerigar community.

June proved to be another busy and rewarding month for budgerigar enthusiasts across Western Australia, with three major club events bringing breeders, exhibitors and supporters together despite the challenges of winter weather. From a successful table show and championship event to a highly anticipated annual auction, the month showcased the passion, dedication and camaraderie that continue to drive the hobby forward.

Rare Budgerigar Club Enjoys Successful Table Show

The month began with the Rare Budgerigar Club of WA’s Table Show, which attracted an encouraging entry of quality birds and provided an enjoyable day for members and visitors alike. Beyond the competition, events such as these remain an important opportunity for breeders to exchange knowledge, showcase their breeding programs and strengthen the friendships that make the fancy so enjoyable.

A special thank you goes to Trill for its generous donation of accessories for the club’s sales table. The well-stocked display proved extremely popular throughout the day, with proceeds providing valuable financial support for the club’s ongoing activities.

The club will settle into its new home at the Drill Hall in Bayswater after outgrowing its previous venue. The move reflects the club’s continued growth, and members are looking forward to officially showcasing the new facility during this weekend’s Annual Show. Best wishes to everyone involved as they begin this exciting new chapter.

Strong Competition at the Southwest Annual Show

The South West Budgerigar Club of WA also held its Annual Championship Show during June, attracting an excellent attendance and 94 birds on the bench. Exhibitors presented an outstanding standard of quality, with many exceptional birds displayed throughout the competition. Unfortunately, some of these birds were ineligible for National selection due to condition at selections.

Congratulations to the organising committee, exhibitors and volunteers for delivering another successful championship event.

The club now turns its attention to its next event, a Table Show to be held on 19 July 2026, providing another excellent opportunity for breeders to exhibit their birds and enjoy some friendly competition.

Metropolitan Auction Draws Strong Support

Rounding out the month was the Metropolitan Budgerigar Club of WA’s Annual Auction, once again proving to be one of the highlights of the calendar.

The auction attracted excellent support from affiliated club members and the wider public, with an impressive catalogue of 118 quality lots generating strong interest throughout the day. It was particularly pleasing to see interstate bidders participating, further reinforcing the reputation of Western Australian budgerigars and the quality being produced by local breeders.

A Community Built on Volunteers

The continued success of these events/shows is a testament to the dedication of the many volunteers, organising committees, exhibitors, and members who generously contribute their time and expertise. Their collective efforts ensure Western Australia’s budgerigar clubs continue to thrive and provide valuable opportunities for breeders at every level.

As the show season gathers momentum, there is every reason to be optimistic about the months ahead. With strong participation, growing clubs and consistently high-quality birds on display, the future of the Western Australian budgerigar fancy remains bright.
