WABC Report April 2026
Busy Month for WA Budgerigar Clubs as Shows Draw Strong Attendance
Western Australia’s budgerigar community has enjoyed a lively start to the year, with several clubs hosting key events throughout March and more celebrations planned for April.
The South West Budgerigar Club opened the month with its Annual Young Hens Championship and Young Cock Bird Derby on 15 March. More than 70 birds were benched for judging, making it one of the club’s strongest early‑year showings. Judge, Brad Demarti took on the significant task of assessing the large field, and organisers praised the strong turnout from exhibitors. The club also acknowledged its show sponsor, Club Patron Allan Michael of the United Kingdom, for his ongoing support.
On 28 March, the Metropolitan Budgerigar Club of WA held its Annual Championship Show, attracting a substantial number of entries. Judging was carried out by two teams—Brad Demarti with Les Trumper, and Mick Gearing with John Patterson. The event drew an enthusiastic crowd of members, with John Patterson taking out Champion Bird for the day.
Not all scheduled events were able to proceed, however. The Rare Budgerigar Club of WA was forced to cancel its 7 March table show due to high temperatures and the activation of the heat rule.
Looking ahead, April promises to be a milestone month. The South West Budgerigar Club of WA will celebrate its 35th anniversary with a special table show featuring monetary prizes. Congratulations are extended to the club on reaching this significant achievement.
Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Budgerigar Club of WA will host a special ANZAC Day show, honouring members of the Australian Defence Force. The club will make a monetary donation to the local RSL, and special awards will be presented to winning exhibitors in recognition of Australia’s service personnel. The event is expected to be a meaningful occasion for all who attend.
