Western Australia – Growing Momentum as the 2026 Season Continues

Spring has arrived in Western Australia, and with it comes a renewed sense of activity across the State’s budgerigar community. Clubs, breeders and exhibitors are making the most of the 2026 exhibition season. Accordingly, sales, auctions and shows provide plenty of opportunities for members to come together and share their passion for the budgerigar.

The strength of a State’s fancy is not measured solely by championship results. It is also reflected in the willingness of clubs to create opportunities for participation. In addition, attracting new enthusiasts and supporting breeders at every stage of their involvement is key. Recent events across Western Australia have demonstrated that the local fancy continues to be active and progressive.

Concluding the month of September, The Metropolitan Budgerigar Club of WA Table Show, held on 26 September, will provide another opportunity for exhibitors to bring their birds together in a traditional table-show environment.

Supporting the Hobby Beyond the Show Bench

Earlier in September, the Rare Budgerigar Club of WA held its inaugural Sales Day. The event brought together a variety of local vendors offering an array of birds, products and equipment. Moreover, it attracted members of the Western Australian bird community as well as members of the public from the surrounding area.

For a first-time event, the level of interest was encouraging and demonstrated the value of providing opportunities that extend beyond the traditional exhibition calendar. Events such as Sales Days can play an important role in introducing new people to the hobby. Established breeders and enthusiasts can also connect, exchange information and support one another.

The South West Budgerigar Club of WA also held its annual auction, with a strong selection of birds offered by breeders from across Western Australia. With birds available to suit a range of breeders and aviary programs, the auction provided an excellent opportunity for members to acquire new stock. Additionally, it allowed breeders to promote their breeding programs.

Auctions remain an important part of the hobby, particularly in supporting the movement of quality birds between aviaries and encouraging interaction between breeders. They also provide an opportunity for newer members to meet experienced breeders. Notably, they allow newcomers to gain knowledge that can assist them in developing their own breeding programs.

A Busy October Ahead

The Western Australian exhibition calendar remains busy as we move into October.

On 3 October, the Rare Budgerigar Club of WA will host a BRASEA Show at the Drill Hall in Bayswater. The event will provide members with an opportunity to exhibit birds, with a particular focus on rarer varieties. At the same time, it provides opportunities to buy and sell birds and support the club by making purchases at the accessories table. Importantly, the event also provides an avenue to showcase the hobby to members of the wider community.

The South West Budgerigar Club of WA will then hold its Table Show on the 18th of October 2026. This continues the club’s important role in supporting the budgerigar fancy in the southern metropolitan areas.

October will conclude with the Metropolitan Budgerigar Club of WA UBC Championship Show on 24th of October. This event gives exhibitors another opportunity to showcase their birds and compete at a club championship level.

Building Towards 2028

While the current exhibition season remains the immediate focus, there is also a significant milestone on the horizon for Western Australian breeders and exhibitors.

The 2028 ANBC National Championships will being hosted in Western Australia, providing the State with an exciting opportunity to welcome the Australian budgerigar community.

Preparatory work is already progressing, and the importance of this event extends beyond the week of the Nationals themselves. Hosting the National Championship for the ANBC provides an opportunity to promote the Western Australian fancy. It also encourages greater participation and showcases the quality of birds being produced by breeders throughout the State.

It will also require a significant commitment from the Western Australian clubs, breeders and volunteers. They will be working with the ANBC Event Management Working Group to ensure the success of the event. Western Australia is looking forward to hosting the event. Furthermore, they are working with the ANBC Event Management Group to ensure a successful National Show in 2028.

Looking Forward

The activity being seen across Western Australia is a positive reflection of the commitment of our clubs and members. Whether it is through a major championship show, a local table show, an auction or a sales day, each event contributes to keeping the hobby active. Additionally, they provide opportunities for people to become involved.

As a State Representative, I would like to acknowledge the clubs, committees, judges, exhibitors, breeders and volunteers who continue to give their time to support the Western Australian fancy. Their efforts, often undertaken behind the scenes, are what allow the exhibition season and the broader hobby to continue to grow.

With a busy spring calendar ahead and preparations for the 2028 Nationals gathering momentum, there is plenty to look forward to in Western Australia.
