Welcome to your Monthly Edition of the ANBC Gazette
Dear Fanciers,
The major news coming out of the bird room at present is the ongoing concern surrounding Avian Influenza (Bird Flu), with increasing numbers of cases being detected and testing positive. We have now seen a positive result recorded in Queensland, with further cases identified across other southern states.
At this stage, the most important thing we can all do is remain vigilant and continue to follow sound biosecurity practices. Please ensure you regularly check the relevant Biosecurity websites within your own state for the latest information and advice.
Our resident veterinarian, Hamish Baron, has provided an informative article in this edition of the Gazette to bring everyone up to date with the current situation. I encourage all members to take the time to read and carefully consider Hamish’s words of wisdom, as maintaining good biosecurity practices is everyone’s responsibility.
Activities within the ANBC are starting to progress, with motions now being submitted from Zones for consideration. Several motions of interest have been received. The motions are listed below:
WABC Motion Tabled
Motion: That Clause 5 of the ANBC Social Media Policy be amended to prohibit the promotion or publication of photographs of young birds during a defined period prior to the ANBC National Show, rather than limiting the restriction solely to birds selected at Zone Selection Shows.
Further, that the prohibited period be defined as either:
1. Commencing on 1 February each year and continuing until the commencement of the ANBC National Show; or
2. Commencing four (4) months prior to the commencement of the ANBC National Show and continuing until the commencement of the Show.
BSNSW Motion Tabled
Motion: That BSNSW proposes to the ANBC the creation of a new Normal Class at the National Championships for Normal Olives and Normal Mauves.
NQBZ Motions Tabled
Motion 1: Move the ring issue date to for all zones to September 1 each year, starting in 2028.
Motion 2: Move the ANBC Show date to a later date preferably late July/early August.
Motion 3: ANBC judges are awarded Hall of Fame status after they have reached a total of 7 appointments at the ANBC show.
SQBBA Motion Tabled
Motion: That the Australian National Budgerigar Council (ANBC) establish an Event Management Group (EMG) to plan, coordinate, and conduct ANBC National Show and associated events that promote both the ANBC and the hobby of budgerigar breeding and exhibition.
Motions will be circulated and discussed at the next ANBC Meeting, scheduled for 10 August via Zoom.
Show Season and Auctions
The quieter period for shows seems to be mainly within the southern Zones, while WABC and SQBBA continue to enjoy a steady supply of shows and activities.
However, auctions appear to have taken centre stage across social media platforms, with numerous walk-in auctions, 32-bird auctions and private sales generating considerable interest. Buyers continue to search for improved genetics, particular varieties, specific features, or simply the hens and cocks required to balance their breeding programs.

ANBC Executive Update
The ANBC Executive has been relatively quiet in recent times; however, I expect activity will increase as preparations progress for the 51st ANBC Trill Expert National, with the Working Group working alongside the BNSW National Committee.
There has also been discussion within the Working Group regarding streamlining the duties, responsibilities and processes of the group moving forward.
This brings me to a topic that has been raised from time to time. There are some factions within Zones that believe the Working Group controls the National Show process and should be more accountable for its duties and outcomes.
These concerns and perceptions will be addressed over the coming weeks, with the aim of providing greater clarity around the role, responsibilities and accountability of the Working Group. Hopefully, this will remove any misunderstanding surrounding its purpose and ensure everyone has a clear understanding of how the process operates.
